Last year, Penn State York student Samantha Glancey danced for 46 hours straight to raise money for pediatric cancer through the THON Dance Marathon, and she wanted to do something even better this year to garner support for the cause.

"I had to keep up that momentum and do something big," the sophomore psychology major said.

Because she developed a love for the arts and performing in high school, Glancey in July began planning a variety show of sorts to serve as a new fundraiser with proceeds going toward research for childhood cancer.

Her event, Cabaret for a Cure, is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. — the doors will open at 6:30 — on Jan.29 at  Penn State York’s Pullo Family Performing Arts Center. Tickets, which are $5 a piece, are already available online and will be available at the Pullo Center's box office the day of the show.

"It's perfect for the family, and I keep telling people it's also a great, cheap date night," Glancey said.

Glancey and her friend Giovanni Senno will act as emcees for the event, which will boast a wide variety of acts, from singers performing opera arias to traditional Nigerian dances.

"There are lots of guitar players and singers, we have a group coming in to do a karate demonstration," Glancey said. "We have a little bit of everything."

The show's 14 acts will be performed by students, professors, local dance teams and other members from the community, she said.

"I'm really looking forward to see it all come together with the lights, and the sound and see what everyone is wearing," Glancey said. "It's taken up a huge part of my life, and I can't wait to see it come forth."

Everything she has done, from the dance marathon to the cabaret, is in memory of her brother Daniel, who lost his battle to pediatric cancer when she was only 6 years old, Glancey said.

"THON has just become a huge part of my life," she said. "It's one of my biggest passions."
