A northern York County man has been sentenced to prison for having sexual contact with a mentally disabled woman.

Robert Wayne Crawford, 68, of the 1400 block of Roundtop Road in Warrington Township, must report to York County Prison on Dec. 4 to begin serving his punishment of 11½ to 23 months, which will be followed by three years of probation, according to court records.

He was sentenced Monday in York County Court, where presiding Common Pleas Judge Gregory M. Snyder also ordered Crawford to have no contact whatsoever with his victim, to complete sexual-offender treatment and to abide by sexual-offender probation conditions, records state.

Crawford pleaded guilty to two charges, including indecent assault of a person with a mental disability, according to court records.

In exchange, his other charges were dismissed, records state. They included rape of a mentally disabled person and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with someone who is disabled.

State police determined Crawford's victim did not have the intellectual ability to consent to the sexual contact, documents state, and charges were filed in August 2019.

According to state police, Crawford had sexual contact with the woman on multiple occasions between May 2016 and February 2017.

He told the woman he was "teaching" her so she could "learn" about sex and told police the same thing, court documents state.

He also told the woman not to tell anyone else, but she eventually confided in someone in February 2017, after which she was taken to a local hospital to be examined and police were alerted, according to court documents.

Crawford's public defender declined comment on Monday.
