A man who allegedly broke into two York-area public schools and slept in them is now making his bed in a different institution.

Andrew Charles Altland, 23, of no fixed address, is in York County Prison on $50,000 bail, accused of burglarizing York Suburban Middle School and the York County School of Technology.

Police allege he crashed at both schools, stole clothing and food, caused damage and defecated on the floor of York Tech's attendance office.

Acting on a tip received Thursday, Aug. 29, York Area Regional Office Andy Mallette tracked Altland to a barbershop in the Queensgate Towne Center and arrested him, charging documents state.

York Area Regional Police said he got inside York Tech, probably through an unlocked door, between Tuesday, Aug. 27, and Thursday and spent much of the night in the school, located off South Queen Street in York Township.

While there, Altland stole shoes and a blue York Tech T-shirt as well as food, police said. He also wandered around the school, rummaging through desks and offices.

Charging documents don't state why Altland allegedly defecated on the floor.

In that case, his bail is set at $50,000 and he is charged with burglary, theft, institutional vandalism and defiant trespass.

Not his 1st break-in? Springettsbury Township Police have also filed charges against Altland, accusing him of breaking into York Suburban Middle School on Sundale Drive between Aug. 23 and 26.

Altland got inside the school after breaking a window with a rock, according to township Detective Christopher Ford, who filed the charges.

"This officer has prior knowledge and experience with Altland in which he unlawfully entered YSMS and consumed food, slept and showered," Ford wrote in documents.

Documents allege Altland found a set of master keys and stole $120 cash and a laptop computer, then headed to the cafeteria.

There, he grabbed soda, juice, chips and other snacks and made his way to the student lounge, where he took off his pants and appeared to nap on the couch, according to documents.

Principal Scott Shirey said it will cost the district more than $5,000 to repair, secure and re-key York Suburban Middle School, charging documents state.

Altland has not yet been arraigned on the burglary, theft and institutional vandalism charges filed by Ford on Tuesday, Sept. 3, according to court records, meaning he has not yet had bail set in that case.

It is unclear whether Altland has retained an attorney.
