Police: Dallastown student secretly recorded sex in weight room
An 18-year-old Dallastown Area High School student is accused of filming himself have sex with another student in the weight room, according to police.
York Area Regional Police said Ajwaun "AJ" Travone McDaniel filmed himself having sex with the 15-year-old student on Oct. 8, and the girl was unaware he was filming at the time.
McDaniel, of the 2400 block of South Queen Street in York Township, is charged with filming a sexual act of someone younger than 18, sexual abuse of minors, corruption of minors and possession of an instrument of crime, according to online court records.
Troy Fisher, director of human resources at the district, said the district is committed to providing a safe, secure environment for students, but he said the district would not be able to comment beyond that because of student confidentiality.
Incident: According to court documents, a school employee spotted the girl lying on the floor of the weight room the morning of Oct. 8.
The employee reviewed surveillance footage and saw a man run out of the weight room as soon as the employee turned the lights on in the room, officials said.
That man, police said, was McDaniel.
Dean of students Adam Hostetter spoke to the victim, who admitted to having sex with McDaniel in the weight room, according to authorities.
Assistant Principal Chad Bumstead reviewed surveillance footage of the weight room and saw a distorted image of two people and what appeared to be a cellphone light going on and off, officials said.
McDaniel: Police spoke with McDaniel on Oct. 9, and he allowed police to search his phone, court documents state.
In the recently deleted folder police said they found several short videos of a man having sex with a female, whom McDaniel identified as the 15-year-old. McDaniel told police he was the man in the video, officials said.
He said this happened before school started on Oct. 8, according to authorities. McDaniel also told police that the girl was not his girlfriend, police said.
Police spoke to the victim and told her of the videos on McDaniel's phone, officials said. The victim told police she didn't know she was being recorded while the two were having sex, court documents state.
Charges for McDaniel were filed Friday, Oct. 19, and McDaniel was arraigned on the charges Monday, Oct. 22.
McDaniel remains free on $10,000 unsecured bail. A listed number could not be found for him, and he does not have an attorney listed.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 19 at District Judge Scott Laird's office.
