Up to five recent business robberies in the past two weeks — most committed with a gun — are believed to be the work of one man, York City Police said.

Detectives and members of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are now hoping residents might recognize that spree robber and report his identity to investigators.

"It's a priority for us," York City Detective First Class Andrew Shaffer said, as well as for federal investigators. "The ATF is working with us on a daily basis."

So far, no one has been hurt, Shaffer said, but the robber has pointed his gun at some robbery victims.

The most recent happened about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Joe's Pizza, 757 E. Prospect St., when he held up the restaurant at gunpoint, police said.

Other victims: The robber has also targeted Family Dollar at 133 N. Duke St. and Eby's Market at 601 W. Princess St., according to Shaffer.

He has been taking cash and, where possible, cigarettes, the detective said.

Cigarettes are a commodity regularly sold and traded on the street, Shaffer confirmed.

Detectives are awaiting results of evidence sent to forensic labs, he said.

In addition to possibly identifying the robber, those lab results also could help detectives determine whether he is behind all five or just some of them, according to Shaffer.

The pace of the robberies appears to be accelerating, he said.

Anyone with information on the robber's identity or whereabouts is asked to call the ATF's 24-hour toll-free hotline, 888-ATF-FIRE, or email tips to ATFTips@atf.gov.

Or anonymously text "Yorktips" and your information to 847411. Anonymous tips can also be phoned in to the city's anonymous crime tip line, 717-849-2204.
