York City man charged with kidnapping 5-month-old son
A York City man is accused of chasing his girlfriend with a handgun, then kidnapping their 5-month-old son, according to officials.
York City Police say Matthew Acevedo also choked his girlfriend before taking off with their son on Wednesday, Sept. 19.
Acevedo, 27, of the first block of North West Street, is charged with kidnapping, strangulation, endangering child welfare, prohibited possession of a firearm and simple assault.
Allegations: According to police, Acevedo and his girlfriend were arguing at their home around 5:30 p.m. that day.
His girlfriend was not happy about him going to jail over warrants, and during the argument Acevedo struck her in the face several times before choking her, court documents allege. He did this while their child was in the room, officials said.
Police say he went to the bedroom and got a handgun, causing his girlfriend to flee to the Turkey Hill on West Market Street.
When she returned to the apartment, Acevedo had taken to the baby, according to officials.
Police were able to contact Acevedo and convince him to give the baby to his mother, charging documents state. She returned the child to Acevedo's girlfriend, according to police.
Acevedo, who is a felon, is not allowed to have a firearm, and police say they found live cartridges around his bed, in plain view.
Acevedo was arraigned on the charges Monday, Sept. 24, and he was sent to York County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail.
He does not have an attorney listed.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 8 at District Judge James Morgan's office.
