A West York man is accused of knocking a pregnant woman unconscious Thursday, Sept. 6, according to officials.

West York Police say Daniel Reyes Jr. and the woman were in an argument that became physical, leading Reyes to punch her and knock her out. 

Reyes, 20, of the first block of South Highland Avenue, is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault of an unborn child, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.

Knocked out: Police say the two were in a car in the 1600 block of West Market Street around noon when he began hitting her.

The victim, 19, told Reyes she was going to the police department to make a report, and Reyes pulled on the steering wheel in an attempt to cause an accident, documents state.

Police say the victim, who was driving, pulled over, and the two began fighting again. A witness told officials that the victim was punching Reyes, court documents state.

The two were hitting each other, and the victim collapsed, officials said.

Officers responded to the scene and found the woman unconscious, with Reyes leaning over her from the passenger seat, police said. Reyes was trying to wake her up, documents state.

Officers were able to wake her up, and she was treated by ambulance personnel, officials said. Police say she was 16 weeks pregnant.

Reyes told police the two had been arguing the whole car ride, and he began poking her, documents state. He said the two then began pushing each other before the victim pulled over, according to authorities. 

Reyes said the victim began punching him until he "lost control" and began punching her back, striking her on the right side of the face, charging documents state.

She then lost consciousness, prompting Reyes to call 911, police said.

The victim was taken to York Hospital for evaluation, and Reyes was taken to the county's central booking unit, according to court documents.

Reyes was arraigned Thursday night, and he remains free on $10,000 unsecured bail.

He could not be reached for comment, and he does not have an attorney listed.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 20 at District Judge Jennifer J.P. Clancy's office.
