Officer involved in Motel 6 shooting placed on leave
The officer who fatally shot a retail theft suspect who fired at officers at a Motel 6 in Manchester Township on Saturday night has been placed on leave.
West Manchester Township Police Chief John Snyder confirmed Monday, Aug. 27, that the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave. The officer has not been publicly identified.
State police say that Logan Montgomery, 29, a suspect in a retail theft out of West Manchester Township, was killed Saturday, Aug. 25, after he shot at officers at the Motel 6 at 125 Arsenal Road.
Shooting: According to state police, who is investigating the shooting at the request of the York County District Attorney's Office, officers from West Manchester Township and Northern York County Regional Police went to the motel at 8:36 p.m. Saturday.
Northern Regional Deputy Chief David Lash said the Northern Regional officer is still on full duty and that the officer was assisting West Manchester Township Police.
According to officials, the two officers went to the hotel after they found out that Montgomery, a suspect in a retail theft earlier that day, was staying there.
The two arrived at the motel and made contact with Montgomery in a hallway inside the motel, and Montgomery pulled out a gun and fired it at the officers, police said.
The West Manchester Township officer returned fire and struck Montgomery. The responding officers provided first aid to Montgomery, and EMS officials arrived on the scene.
Montgomery was taken to York Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:25 p.m., according to the York County Coroner's Office.
No other officers were involved.
Trooper James Spencer, a state police spokesman, said Montgomery was staying at the Motel 6, but Montgomery's last known address was in Columbia, Lancaster County.
Spencer declined to say why Montgomery was in the area, adding that the investigation is still active.
Criminal history: According to online court records, Montgomery has a criminal history in both York and Lancaster counties.
Charging documents filed by Spring Garden Township Police in January 2016 state that Montgomery stole items and broke into the cash register of a Sunoco in the 1000 block of South George Street.
Police said at the time he was caught placing a protein bar in his pocket, and when he was confronted by employees about the theft, he broke the cash register.
He hit one of the employees on the head when two employees attempted to restrain him, charging documents state.
Online court records indicate Montgomery pleaded no contest to simple assault, retail theft and criminal mischief. He was sentenced to a year of probation and ordered to complete a drug and alcohol evaluation.
In Lancaster County, Montgomery has two active cases, one for drug paraphernalia out of Lancaster Township and another for DUI in Warwick Township. Those DUI charges were filed by Northern Lancaster County Regional Police on Aug. 20. The drug paraphernalia charge was filed in early August.
