Police: Newberry Twp. K-9 snags wanted man
A Newberry Township Police K-9 took down a wanted man after police say he barricaded himself in a building.
The police department said William Edward Grier had fled from police and ran into an office building Saturday, Aug. 18.
Newberry Township Police K-9 Tazer was sent out to find him, and he eventually was able to apprehend the man. Police say Grier was wanted on a burglary warrant from Philadelphia.
Grier, 33, of Charlotte, North Carolina, is charged with flight to avoid apprehension and drug charges.
Fled from police: Officers were called to the Value Inn on Robinhood Drive about 8 a.m. Aug. 18 for a report of a domestic dispute in the parking lot.
Police say a woman was trying to get her belongings from the room the two had. When authorities arrived, Grier took off in a Ford F-150, charging documents state.
According to police, Grier then drove to Mobil Mini Storage in the 1000 block of Old Trail Road and hid inside an upstairs office.
Officers there discovered that Grier had an active burglary warrant out of Philadelphia, and charging documents indicate that police called out to Grier and told him of the warrant.
Sent in Tazer: Grier still did not leave the building, and that is when police sent in Tazer.
Tazer, an 8-year-old German shepherd from the Czech Republic, is the department's K-9 officer. His partner, Sgt. Chris Martinez, wrote in charging documents that Tazer searched the upstairs office and heard Grier barricading himself in an adjacent office.
While Tazer was searching, Grier attempted to flee out the back door, but he was taken into custody by Tazer and officers outside, police said.
After taking him into custody, police say they found marijuana and a pipe in his truck.
Grier was arraigned on the charges that afternoon. As of Monday, Aug. 27, he remained in York County Prison in lieu of $50,000 bail.
