Police: West York man kept teen sex assault a secret
A West York man allegedly knew that a teenage girl was having sex with a man she met online, and he kept it a secret, according to officials.
West York Police say Derrick Leonard, 49, told the girl, 13, that she was ready for sex.
Leonard is charged with corruption of minors.
Allegations: Police filed charges last month alleging that 19-year-old Muhammad Shahab, of Steelton, Dauphin County, met the girl online then had sex with her at her house.
Leonard, a family friend, knew about the situation, according to officials.
On Aug. 14, the victim spoke to police about Leonard, charging documents state.
Prior to her meeting with Shahab, she told Leonard that she was meeting up with the man online, charging documents allege. Leonard, police said, told her what to wear and what not to wear.
After Shahab had sex with her and left her home, the victim talked to Leonard and told him they didn't use protection, court documents state.
Leonard told her they would "take care of it" and that it would be OK, according to police.
The girl was not taken to the hospital for any testing, and both the girl and Leonard kept the incident a secret from her mother, documents state.
In addition to keeping the sexual assault a secret, Leonard let the girl watch pornographic videos on his cellphone, officials said.
Told to lie: According to information included in Shahab's charging documents, when police got involved, Leonard instructed the girl to lie to authorities.
Court documents state that the man talked to the victim about "not letting this out" and to not get anyone in trouble.
According to court documents, the victim did not tell the truth during her first interview with authorities. It wasn't until mid-June, during another interview, that she told them about the alleged incident, officials said.
Shahab: Charging documents for Shahab indicate that Shahab and the girl started talking after they met online, and they talked on Facebook about meeting up.
The two had met online on "MeetMe," and her account said she was 13, court documents allege. Police say Shahab's account name was "Alex" and his age was listed as 19.
The two got together in person at a nearby gas station on May 6, while the girl's mother attended church, officials said.
They went back to her home and started kissing, and the two then went into a bedroom and had sex, charging documents state. Afterward he told her she was being "too clingy," and he left, police said.
Before he left he asked for her email address and said he wanted to keep talking with her, documents state. The victim told authorities that Shahab asked her to delete all her messages, according to police.
Shahab is charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with someone younger than 16, unlawful contact with a minor, statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors, soliciting child porn and indecent assault.
Shahab remains free after posting $100,000 bail.
Charges for Leonard were filed Monday, Aug. 20, and he was arraigned on the charges Tuesday, Aug. 21.
He was sent to York County Prison in lieu of $10,000 bail. He does not have an attorney listed.
Leonard's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 6 at District Judge Jennifer J.P. Clancy's Office.
