Police: KKK recruitment flyers found in Dover Twp.
Members of the Ku Klux Klan's White Knights of America distributed recruitment flyers in a Dover Township neighborhood over the weekend, and police said they are looking to identify those people for littering.
"This is the first time we've had this in years," Northern York County Regional Police Deputy Chief David Lash said. "I can't even remember the last time."
Two residents called police the morning of Sunday, Aug. 19, to report finding plastic baggies that held a bit of birdseed, for weight, and literature about joining the KKK, according to Lash.
"The responding officer actually took it upon himself to go around the neighborhood and collect as many of these as he could find before people had the chance to call about them," Lash said. "A lot of the people don't even know these were thrown in their driveways."
The officer rounded up about 20 such baggies from Englewood Court, Oakley Drive, Hilton Avenue, Brookside Drive, Dovington Avenue and the Brownstone Development, the deputy chief said.
Lash described them as recruitment flyers. He said the literature itself — which is protected by the First Amendment — used no racial epithets, made no threats and didn't disparage any specific groups of people.
"They were not outwardly offensive ... other than being from the White Knights of America," Lash said.
Police don't yet know whether the people who distributed the flyers are local, he said.
Scattering rubbish: Although their message is legal, littering is not, Lash said.
"It's scattering rubbish, because some of the flyers were found along the roadway and on the roadway," he said.
Police are asking people who live in the neighborhood to check their surveillance systems for images of either those who distributed the flyers or the vehicle or vehicles they were in.
Police also would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the flyers being distributed.
Those with information are asked to call the Northern Regional Police tip line at 717-467-TELL or email information to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Related incident? The Loyal White Knights of the KKK put flyers in the windshields of vehicles parked outside Regal Cinemas at the West Manchester Town Center on Aug. 11.
It was in response to director Spike Lee's new movie, "BlacKkKlansman," which portrays a black detective going undercover to infiltrate the KKK, according to the flyers.
