A York City man is accused of spraying city workers with Roundup when they told him his home was being condemned, according to officials.

York City Police said Gregory Dennis assaulted York City codes inspectors Michelle Painter and Shelton Scott on Friday, July 27.

Dennis, 38, of the first block of North Sherman Street, is charged with two counts of aggravated assault and simple assault.

Incident: Court documents state Painter and Scott went to Dennis' home about 10:30 a.m. Friday. They went there to tell the residents that the house would be condemned the next day, officials said.

Dennis was upset about the condemnation and sprayed Painter in the face and mouth with Roundup, police said. He also sprayed Scott on the front of his shirt and pants, court documents allege.

Roundup, according to its website, is used to kill weeds. Police say Roundup was being used to kill bed bugs that had infested the house. Roundup's website lists one product that can kill bugs; however, it is used for lawns.

Police said Dennis put the Roundup away and came toward Scott, who put his hand up and told Dennis to get back. Dennis grabbed Scott's left index finger and bent it back, according to court documents.

Philip Given, chief of staff for York City Mayor Michael Helfrich, said the inspectors received medical care and have returned to work.

"The safety of our employees, particularly the ones who are out in the field all day, is our biggest concern, so there will be further discussions," Given said.

Dennis was taken to the county's central booking unit for arraignment. As of Tuesday, July 31, Dennis remains in York County Prison in lieu of $2,500 bail.

He does not have an attorney listed.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 10 at District Judge Linda Williams' office.
