A recent  DUI checkpoint  at York's Interstate 83 business loop ended in the arrests of a number of intoxicated drivers, including a drunken mother with kids in her car and people in illegal possession of guns and drugs, according to state police.

One man tried to eat the MDMA — commonly called ecstasy or molly — he was in possession of and had to be taken to York Hospital, according to a news release from state police Cpl. Brian Torkar.

After being released from the hospital, the alleged molly-muncher received an additional charge of tampering with evidence, the corporal's news release states.

Torkar said the DUI checkpoint was held  Saturday, June 30, on the I-83 business loop.

Seventeen drivers were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence, several of whom were under the influence of drugs, he noted, including the man who tried to eat the drugs he possessed.

Three people were arrested after police found them in illegal possession of two handguns, one of which had been reported stolen from Virginia, the release states.

Babies in car: One woman allegedly driving under the influence had three babies in her vehicle, none of whom were properly restrained in child safety seats, Torkar said.

Other drivers were cited for driving with suspended licenses and careless driving, he said.

Participating in the DUI checkpoint with state police were West Manchester Township Police and York Area Regional Police, the release states.

Drug-recognition experts with state police and Southern Regional Police were on scene to help identify impaired drivers, said Torkar, who himself is a drug-recognition expert.

Also assisting at the checkpoint were deputies from the York County Sheriff's Office, the Loganville Volunteer Fire Department, the York County District Attorney's Office, Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Mission Barbecue.

Multi-agency checkpoints in York County are organized by the Center for Traffic Safety.
