Police: York City man fires gun a few feet away from other people
A York City man fired a gun and then left the scene and hid the gun on Tuesday, June 12, according to officials.
Police say Walter Mikal Jenkins Jr. fired a gun just before 3 p.m. on North Penn Street just south of North Street Tuesday, and it is believed that he was firing at other people.
Jenkins, 20, of the 300 block of West North Street, is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, possession of a weapon and recklessly endangering another person.
Lt. Gene Fells said Friday, June 15, that there were people shooting back and forth in that area on Tuesday, and that Jenkins was firing at someone. The lieutenant said investigators expect to file additional charges in the incident.
Shots fired: According to court documents, Jenkins fired a gun a few feet away from other people while in the area of North Penn Street just south of North Street.
Police say he was aiming south, fired the shots, then went eastbound on foot toward the 300 block of West North Street before going through a breezeway.
At the scene, police found a blue SUV with a broken window along with two spent .22-caliber cartridge cases stamped "REM," documents state. Investigators also found four spent 9 mm cartridge cases, officials said.
Witnesses provided police with a description of Jenkins, and he was found at the scene of the incident, charging documents state. Jenkins spoke to police and admitted his involvement in the incident, according to officials.
Police say he had hidden the gun, a semi-automatic pistol, in the area of the 300 block of West North Street. The ammunition cartridge in the gun was stamped "REM," documents state.
Jenkins remains in York County Prison in lieu of $75,000 bail. He does not have an attorney listed.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 29 at District Judge Joel Toluba's office.
