Police: York-area man attacked wife over comment about his mom
A York-area man who's apparently sensitive about his mama physically attacked his wife after she said she'd had a nightmare about the woman, according to police allegations.
Paul Eugene Fendley Jr., 30, formerly of York City and now of the 2000 block of Patriot Street in North Codorus Township, remains free on $5,000 bail, charged with aggravated assault and simple assault.
According to charging documents filed by York City Police, Fendley put his hands around wife Kayla Fendley's neck, then punched her in the face, about 8 a.m. May 21.
She reported the May 21 assault on May 27, according to documents.
Paul Fendley's listed attorney, Robert Schefter Jr., said that Fendley maintains his innocence.
"Mr. Fendley is a loving father who had to remove himself and his daughter from a dangerous situation and file for divorce, custody and protection from abuse against Mrs. Fendley," Schefter said in a text statement. "The false accusations in these criminal charges are a desperate attempt at retaliation almost a week after Paul left. Mr. Fendley never laid a hand on his wife."
Responding Officer Dustin Gehron noted in charging documents that he saw several marks on Kayla Fendley that appeared unrelated to the May 21 incident, including bruises, a burn on her left forearm and brush burns on both sides of her face.
"I asked Kayla if this was all from (one assault)," Gehron wrote, adding, "Kayla stated that she has been mentally and physically abused by her husband for about a year."
Wife said she was afraid: She told Gehron she had been afraid to call police for help because her husband threatened to take their daughter away, documents state.
Kayla Fendley suffered scrapes on her face when Paul Fendley pushed her down to the sidewalk, police allege. He also used a hot iron to burn her arm, according to charging documents, which don't give dates for those to alleged assaults.
Police said it happened in a home in the 100 block of Irving Road and started after Kayla Fendley told her husband she'd had a nightmare in which her mother-in-law took away the Fendleys' daughter.
"Paul told Kayla that she was being 'F—ing' paranoid," then put his hands around her neck and punched her in the face when she struggled to remove his hands from her neck, Gehron wrote in charging documents.
Paul Fendley was arraigned at the county's central booking unit on June 3, according to court records. His preliminary hearing is set for June 15, according to court records.
