A Delone Catholic High School teacher and York County resident had a relationship with a 16-year-old student that included giving her a thong for her 16th birthday, according to authorities.

McSherrystown Police say Gary Jon Hatez Jr., 31, texted the girl numerous times, asking her to send him pictures of her wearing it as "proof."

Hatez, of the 300 block of Penn Street, Hanover, is charged with child pornography, corruption of minors and criminal use of a communications facility, among other charges.

Allegations: According to charging documents filed by Chief Michael Woods, the school contacted police after officials were informed that Hatez allegedly purchased a thong for the student's 16th birthday.

Hatez was confronted in March and admitted to purchasing the underwear for her and giving it to her while at school, Woods wrote.

Following the admission, Hatez was put on suspension, according to officials.

Investigators discovered thousands of text messages between the student and the teacher "at all hours of the day and night," starting in November and continuing until the end of March, police said.

When searching the girl's phone, police say they found several texts from Hatez asking the girl to send him photos of herself wearing the thong as "proof" that she was wearing it.

"(Hatez) was constantly asking for proof," Woods wrote in court documents.

On March 18, after several texts asking for proof, the student sent him a photo, officials said. Once he received the photo, he asked for "proof" from the "other side," meaning the back view of her, court documents allege.

In the days following, texts from Hatez indicated that he wanted her to delete all texts from a prior weekend, and said some people "may get the wrong idea," according to police. Those texts, police said, were the ones where he asked for "proof."

The Adams County District Attorney's Office said in a news release that Hatez was arrested Thursday, May 24.

He was sent to Adams County Prison in lieu of $100,000 bail. He does not have an attorney listed.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, May 30, at District Judge Matthew Harvey's office.

It is not clear if Hatez remains employed at the school. School officials could not be reached Thursday night.

Teaching: His teaching certification remained active as of Thursday, according to online records.

His online profile for the school states that Hatez has taught social studies at the school since August 2008.

Hatez, a 2004 Delone Catholic graduate, also coached the junior varsity girls basketball team, according to his online profile.

He was one of several educators recognized in spring 2017 by the Harrisburg diocese for their excellence and leadership in Catholic schools across the midstate.
