Fallen York City firefighters' loved ones pursue legal action
The loved ones of two York City firefighters who died in the line of duty last month are pursuing legal action in a wrongful death suit against a York City-based engineering firm.
Attorneys for Casey Flanscha, widow of Ivan Flanscha, and Allison Hoffman, fiancee of Zachary Anthony, filed an intent to sue C.S. Davidson Inc., according to court documents filed earlier this week.
The notice, called a praecipe, was filed Tuesday, April 10, in the York County Prothonotary's Office.
The filings list Casey Flanscha as administrator of her husband's estate and Hoffman as administrator of Anthony's estate. The praecipe does not list details or allegations but instead puts the defendant, the court and the public on notice that a civil lawsuit is expected to be filed.
Ivan Flanscha, 50, and Anthony, 29, died after a wall collapsed March 22 while they were at the former Weaver Piano & Organ Co. building at 127 N. Broad St.
Ivan Flanscha had been with the department since 1999, and Anthony had been there since 2010. They were among a group of four firefighters in the building dealing with hot spots from a fire the day before. The two other firefighters suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.
C.S. Davidson issued a statement Thursday, April 10, saying that the organization was called to the site after the collapse that trapped the men. No employee had set foot inside the building until then, the firm said.
It is unclear who called the firm to the site. Philip Given, chief of staff for York City Mayor Michael Helfrich, said he could not comment on that.
A message left for C.S. Davidson president and CEO Kerryn Fulton seeking additional information was not returned by about 1 p.m. Thursday.
It is not immediately clear why the two women are pursuing legal action. Stewart Cohen and Joel Rosen, two Philadelphia-based attorneys representing the women in the case, did not immediately return a message seeking comment Thursday.
