A York City man who shot his girlfriend in the leg during a domestic dispute in 2016 has been sentenced to state prison. He is now her husband.

Timothy Williams, 55, of Pennsylvania Avenue, appeared before Common Pleas Judge Gregory M. Snyder on Wednesday, March 28.

Snyder sentenced Williams to a total of 6½ to 13 years in prison, according to defense attorney Farley Holt.

The judge gave Williams credit for the 265 days he's already spent locked up, Holt said.

A jury on Jan. 5 convicted Williams of aggravated assault and being a felon in illegal possession of a firearm.

"With regard to the aggravated assault charge, he still maintains his innocence," Holt said. "He maintains the shooting of his then-paramour and now wife was accidental."

Appeal contemplated: Williams does acknowledge he possessed a gun "when he wasn't supposed to," his attorney said.

"He's contemplating filing an appeal," Holt said on Wednesday. "That decision won't be made until early next week."

During trial, prosecutors had to obtain a material-witness warrant to have the victim in the case, Michele Williams, brought to trial to testify, according to Holt.

Michele Williams did testify for the prosecution, said attorney Heather Reiner, who represented Timothy Williams at trial. Williams retained Holt after his conviction, Reiner said.

Timothy and Michele Williams got married while he was out on bail, Reiner confirmed. Court records show he wasn't supposed to have any contact with her at the time as part of his bail conditions.

The background: York City Police were called to the 800 block of West Princess Street on Sept. 28, 2016, where they found the woman with a gunshot wound above her left knee, court documents state.

She lived in the block at the time and told police she and Timothy Williams were arguing there when he pulled out a handgun, documents state.

He chased her out of her apartment and fired three times, the first of which was fired into the air, police said. He then fired a round into the windshield of her car, police said.

"Timothy then chased her around the car and fired another shot that struck Michele in the left leg just above her knee," court documents state.

He then fled the scene, according to police, who said he was arrested the next day.
