A Red Lion man and his buddy — both of whom apparently looked down on their luck — got a free lunch from a good Samaritan in North York, police said.

Justin Miller said he bought slices of pizza for the two men because they didn't have money for food, according to Northern York County Regional Police.

That was at Big Mouth Pizza on North George Street in North York, shortly after 6 p.m. Oct. 25, 2017, police said.

The trio then walked down East Seventh Avenue together, and it was there that Miller tried to give a dollar to one of the men, later identified as John Henry Vincent Lake II, according to charging documents.

But instead of simply taking the cash, Lake grabbed Miller's wallet and cellphone from his hand and took off running, according to police.

The other man also ran off, police said.

Recognized by probation: Police released surveillance photos of the robber, after which they were contacted by a York County probation officer who said he and other probation officers were "over 100 percent positive" the robber was Lake, charging documents state.

Lake declined to speak with investigators about the incident and later had his wife call Northern Regional's headquarters, police said.

Sierra Lake gave police the name of a man she said her husband claimed committed the robbery, according to charging documents, but that man's physical description "in no way matched" that of the robber's.

Northern Regional Detective William Haller filed charges Friday, March 23, according to court records.

Lake, 34, of the first block of Boundary Avenue in Red Lion, remains in York County Prison on $15,000 bail, charged with robbery, theft and receiving stolen property.
