Springettsbury Twp. man accused in fatal Spring Garden crash

A Springettsbury Township man faces charges after police say he caused a crash that led to the death of a 77-year-old North Codorus Township man last year.

Police say Chengyang Yu, 21, drove through a stop sign and struck a truck driven by Walter Spangler, causing Spangler's truck to roll over  April 3, 2017.

Yu, of the first block of Morningside Drive, is charged with homicide by vehicle and summary traffic violations.

Spangler's vehicle was driving northbound on Lancaster Avenue, approaching Edgecomb Avenue and had the right-of-way at the intersection, police said.

Yu failed to stop at the intersection and struck Spangler's vehicle on the driver's side, causing it to lose control, flip and come to rest on its roof, officials said.

Collision reconstruction showed that the crash was consistent with distracted driving, and police say Yu had GPS directions already in his phone when police arrived.

Spangler was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was the only one in the truck.

Charges for Yu were filed  March 25, and he was arraigned on them  March 27.

He remains free on $150,000 bail unsecured, meaning that he could forfeit up to that amount if he does not show up to court proceedings.

A phone number could not be found for him, and he does not have an attorney listed.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 10 at District Judge Jennifer J.P. Clancy's office.
