Cash reward offered in unsolved York City homicide
Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information that helps police solve the York City homicide of Jose Angel Aponte.
In a news release sent out Friday, Feb. 23, the state's Crime Stoppers organization said it's believed Aponte was killed during an attempted robbery.
Aponte was walking home from work the night of Oct. 30, 2017, when he was approached in the 300 block of East Market Street by a man who shot Aponte, then ran from the scene, according to Crime Stoppers.
The killer was wearing a hooded jacket. The top of the jacket is black, and the bottom is red with a black-flannel design, officials said.
Aponte, 21, of York City, was shot several times, York City Police have said.
Officers and a White Rose Ambulance crew were called to the scene about 11:35 that night and found Aponte lying on the ground, according to police.
Died at scene: The ambulance crew tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene inside an ambulance, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
Police have said they're unsure how much time elapsed between when Aponte was shot and when he was discovered lying along East Market Street.
City detectives responded to the scene and worked through the night, canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and examining the crime scene.
One person reported hearing gunfire but didn't see the shooting, police said.
Aponte's sister, Bunny Aponte, wrote on a fundraising website that her brother was a quiet man but sweet to those who got to know him.
Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call Pennsylvania Crime Stoppers toll-free at 800-4PA-TIPS. All callers remain anonymous and could be eligible for a cash reward.
Tipsters also can choose to call York City Police at 717-846-1234 or text "Yorktips" and your information to 847-411. The texting service is anonymous, police have said.
