Police: Stolen guns found after York-area chase
Police said five men in a stolen Mercedes fled from police and abandoned the car in the early-morning hours of Feb. 6, after which officers found three handguns in the center console. All three guns were stolen Feb. 5, 2018 from a gun shop.
Northern Regional Police found three guns stolen this week from a Lancaster County gun shop following a police chase in Manchester Township.
Just before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6, a Northern Regional officer pulled into the APlus Sunoco station at the corner of the Susquehanna Trail and Church Road, according to Lt. David Lash of Northern York County Regional Police. That's just off Interstate 83's Emigsville exit (Exit 24).
The officer spotted five young men in the Sunoco store, and at least one had the hood of his sweatshirt pulled over his head to cover his face, Lash said.
All five then got into a newer-model Mercedes and started to leave the lot.
The officer ran the car's license-plate number and learned the car had been reported stolen from Harrisburg, according to Lash.
The officer tried to pull over the Mercedes, but it accelerated quickly and drove around another vehicle in the intersection, the lieutenant said.
Gave chase: The officer turned on his cruiser's lights and siren and gave chase, with the pursuit heading north on the Susquehanna Trail, according to Lash.
The Mercedes turned right onto Conway Street — a dead end — which is when officers caught up to it, police said.
But by that time, the five occupants had fled on foot, Lash said. Officers searched the area but couldn't find them, Lash said.
He said his department obtained a search warrant Tuesday morning to comb through the recovered Mercedes because "we believe(d) the vehicle contains stolen guns."
After obtaining the warrant and searching the car, officers seized three handguns in the center console, according to the lieutenant.
Gun-shop burglary: All three guns were stolen from Trop Gun Shop in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, on Monday, Feb. 5, Lash said.
The burglars stole a total of 17 firearms from the gun shop, which is not far from Elizabethtown, Lancaster Online has reported.
Three men entered Trop Gun Shop and smashed glass display cases to get at the firearms, police have said.
Northern Regional Police continue to investigate, along with agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Harrisburg City Police; and Northwest Lancaster County Regional Police.
Anyone with information about the identity or whereabouts of any of the five males, and anyone with information about the gun-shop burglary, is asked to call Northern Regional's tip line at 717-467-TELL (8355) or send an email to email@example.com.
