A drunken New Year's Eve reveler really shot himself in the foot when he decided to celebrate by firing a handgun in his Dover Township yard, according to police documents.

To be accurate, Andrew Cataldi shot himself in the left calf, Northern York County Regional Police said.

And in what could be described as adding insult to injury, he is now facing criminal charges.

Cataldi, 33, of the 5800 block of Crone Road, has not yet been arraigned on charges of reckless endangerment, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct, according to court records.

His charging documents state that officers were called to his home about 9:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, for an accidental shooting.

Once there, officers found Cataldi lying on his living-room couch, holding a washcloth to his calf, documents state.

There wasn't much bleeding, police said, but Cataldi smelled strongly of alcohol, was slurring his words and admitted drinking eight or nine beers, charging documents state.

Miscounted shots: Cataldi told officers he was firing his handgun on his back deck and thought he had fired all the rounds he loaded into the gun, according to documents.

He also told officers he was shooting into the ground, police said.

"He stated he somehow ended up shooting himself in the leg and called 911 right away," documents state.

Cataldi was taken to York Hospital by Dover Township Ambulance, police said.

Officers found Cataldi's handgun lying on the ground just outside Cataldi's basement door, along with seven spent shell casings, police said.

The handgun was jammed, police said, and the magazine in it was found to be empty.

However, a live round was still chambered, according to charging documents.

Cataldi caused a "hazardous condition" for anyone near his home at the time, police allege.
