Police: Wanted felon threatened to kill child’s mother on Christmas Eve

Police are searching for a 19-year-old York City man — already wanted for a parole violation — who allegedly twice threatened to kill the mother of his child on Christmas Eve. 

Matthew L. Hughes, of the 300 block of South Sherman Street in the city, is facing a dozen charges after allegedly putting a knife to the woman’s back before pointing a gun at her after she fled with her child to a friend’s home, according to charging documents.

Once apprehended, Hughes will be charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, flight to avoid apprehension and carrying a firearm without a license — all felonies — as well as misdemeanor charges of strangulation, making terroristic threats, fleeing or attempting to elude police and two counts of simple assault, among other charges, documents state.

After getting into an argument with the mother of his child Sunday at a home in Red Lion, Hughes put a knife to the woman’s back as she ate and said, “I will kill you right now, b—,” before taking her phone, documents state.

When the woman confronted Hughes for her phone, Hughes pushed her onto a bed and began punching her, documents state. Hughes then began choking her when she started to scream for help, leaving red marks and scrapes on her neck, according to police.

The woman fled the home in Red Lion with her child and went to a friend’s home in York City, where Hughes pulled out a gun and again threatened to kill her before returning her phone, documents state.

York City Police officers responding to the area saw Hughes driving a white Chevrolet Malibu, but he fled and police were unable to find him, documents state. 

Hughes has an warrant for his arrest for violating the terms of his parole for a previous conviction for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

Hughes pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for a September 2015, which prohibits him from carrying or possessing a firearm, charging documents state.
