Police: Motive known in Friday's York City homicide
York City detectives investigating the fatal shooting of Jimmy Avila-Velez Jr. are following up on some good leads, according to their supervisor.
Capt. Troy Bankert said Avila-Velez was targeted when he was gunned down shortly after 8:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10.
Bankert confirmed that detectives believe they've identified a motive in the fatal shooting. However, he said he can't yet release details about it.
He said detectives have uncovered some "good leads" and are in the process of chasing them down.
No arrests had been made as of Monday, Nov. 13.
Avila-Velez, 26, of the 500 block of West Princess Street, died at the scene of his shooting, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
His body was found in an alley near the intersection of South West Street, West Poplar Street and West Newton Avenue.
Bankert said Avila-Velez's homicide is unrelated to the Sunday afternoon shooting that killed James Weimert at East Philadelphia and North Pine streets.
Avila-Velez was walking along West Poplar Street when he was shot, according to the coroner's office.
He collapsed in the street and was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner's office said.
An autopsy was performed Monday morning at Allentown's Lehigh Valley Hospital.
About 4 p.m. Monday, York County Coroner Pam Gay said information gleaned from that autopsy would be released soon.
York City Mayor-elect Mike Helfrich has said that the day Avila-Velez was killed also was the birthday of the man's young daughter, according to a Facebook post.
Helfrich said Avila-Velez was turning his life around.
