York City Police are investigating the death of a 22-year-old who was assaulted early Sunday morning on East Maple Street.

Officers were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. to the first block of East Maple Street for a report of shots fired, according to a news release.

Within minutes of that call, Lester Cortes-Cotto, 22, of the 400 block of South George Street in York City, arrived by private vehicle at York Hospital, where he died at 2:39 a.m., according to a news release by the York County Coroner's office.

Investigators determined Cortes-Cotto was assaulted on the first block of East Maple Street and are treating his death as a homicide, according to police.

York City Police detective Jeffrey Spence said the department is is currently investigatingĀ potential suspects and anticipate charges to be filed in the next few days.

An autopsy has been scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday morning at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown to determine the cause and matter of death, according to the coroner's office.
