A York City man escaped life-threatening injuries when he was attacked near his home early Monday morning, police said.

Joseph Rafael Cruz-Beato, 26, of Salem Avenue, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and was pistol-whipped in the head during the assault, according to Lt. Troy Bankert, who supervises the York City detective bureau.

According to Bankert, Cruz-Beato parked his car in the 400 block of Salem Avenue about 1:09 a.m. Monday and was getting out when he was approached by a man who asked him for a light.

The man pulled out a gun and struck Cruz-Beato in the head, which caused the attacker to drop the gun, the lieutenant said.

Cruz-Beato took the opportunity to flee and ran toward his home.

Shot while fleeing: But the attacker picked up the gun and fired, hitting Cruz-Beato once in the left thigh as the victim was running away, according to Bankert.

The shooter then left the area, he said.

Arriving officers worked to stop the bleeding from Cruz-Beato's leg until an ambulance arrived and transported him to York Hospital, according to Bankert.

The victim's wound was not life-threatening, the lieutenant said.

Bankert said detectives don't yet know if Cruz-Beato was a random crime victim or whether he was targeted for some reason. However, the lieutenant did say the attack is being treated as a robbery.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call York City Police at 717-846-1234, or text "yorktips" and your information to 847-411.
