Man accused of supplying fatal heroin to Dover woman arrested
- Police say a York City man provided the heroin that caused the death of a Dover-area woman.
- George Bermudez, 42, was captured Tuesday at a Manchester Twp. motel.
The York City man accused of providing the heroin that caused the death of a Dover Township woman late last year was arrested June 20, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Northern York County Regional Police say George Bermudez sold heroin to Dianne Mokanyk, her partner and a friend on Dec. 17 and that Mokanyk overdosed on it later that night.
Mokanyk, 56, was pronounced dead at York Hospital the next day.
Bermudez, 42, of 809 W. Princess St., was arrested at the Econo Lodge at 222 Arsenal Road in Manchester on June 20, according to a release from the U.S. Marshals Service.
The U.S. Marshals Task Force found Bermudez at the hotel and arrested him without incident. He is charged with drug delivery resulting in death and criminal use of a communications facility, among other charges.
Overdose: Police were sent to Mokanyk's residence in the 3400 block of Carlisle Road on Dec. 17 for a report of a person not breathing. When police arrived, Mokanyk's partner told officials that Mokanyk was unresponsive.
She had no pulse, and officers attempted to use Narcan on her but were unsuccessful.
Mokanyk's partner said Mokanyk had injected herself with heroin earlier that day and had only been unconscious for about 10 minutes, police said.
Mokanyk was taken to York Hospital, where she later died.
February autopsy results revealed that Mokanyk had died from heroin and fentanyl toxicity, according to charging documents.
Picking up heroin: Police spoke with Mokanyk's partner on Dec. 20. She told police that she, along with Mokanyk and another woman, had gone into York City about 3 p.m. Dec 17 to meet with Bermudez, whom Mokanyk's partner said she had been buying heroin from for about two years, documents state.
Mokanyk dropped off her partner near Bermudez's residence just as he was leaving, according to police.
Bermudez instructed his wife to carry out the deal, documents state. It is not clear if his wife faces charges.
According to charging documents, Mokanyk's partner received six bags of heroin, which she distributed between herself, Mokanyk and the other woman in the car.
Mokanyk and her partner then injected themselves with it just before returning to their Dover Township residence, police said. Her partner said Mokanyk "appeared to be fine," after the injection, according to court documents.
On May 29, officers went to Mokanyk's partner's new home and provided her with a lineup, and she identified Bermudez as the person she purchased heroin from, police said.
Bermudez was arraigned on the charges June 20, and he was remanded to York County Prison in lieu of $250,000 bail.
He does not have an attorney listed.
His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. July 10 at District Judge David Eshbach's office.
