Police: Md. mom charged after taking daughter
A Maryland woman was arrested Saturday morning in Lewisberry after allegedly taking her daughter from her father’s home and then fighting the child’s father and police — all while high on heroin.
Melinda Green, 29, of Old Tanneytown Road in Westminster, Maryland, faces four felony charges — burglary, aggravated assault, criminal trespassing and interfering with the custody of a child — and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, simple assault and endangering the welfare of a child, according to charging documents.
Newberry Township Police Sgt. Braxton Ditty was conducting a traffic stop about 10:30 a.m. Saturday on Market Street in Lewisberry when Devin Green stopped his vehicle and said his 2-year-old daughter had just been kidnapped from his house, Ditty wrote in the charging documents.
Several minutes later, Ditty heard a “scuffle” behind the Lewisberry Post Office and found Devin Green and Melinda Green in a physical altercation, with Melinda Green holding a young child, documents state.
After Ditty got the child away from the altercation, Melinda Green ran across the parking lot to a vehicle, where Ditty tried to take her into custody, documents state.
Melinda Green “became actively aggressive” and attempted to flee, punching Ditty in the face before she was handcuffed, documents state.
After her arrest, Melinda Green told police she was driven from Maryland to Lewisberry on Saturday morning, arriving at Devin Green’s home about 5 a.m., according to charging documents.
Melinda Green said she waited outside the residence, then opened a window and reached in to grab her daughter, documents state.
While searching the perimeter of the home, police found a knife lying on the ground near an open window. Melinda Green told police she was under the influence of heroin when she took her daughter from the home, documents state.
Melinda Green is being held at York County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail, according to online court documents.
