TSA: Wrightsville man had handgun in bag at BWI Airport
Authorities arrested a Wrightsville man at Baltimore Washington International Airport early Friday morning after authorities found a handgun and loaded magazine clip in his carry-on bag, according to a Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman.
The unloaded 9 mm pistol, along with a magazine loaded with six bullets, was discovered at a security checkpoint after the man placed his carry-on bag onto an X-ray conveyor belt, said Lisa Farbstein, TSA spokeswoman.
TSA officers summoned Maryland Transportation Authority Police, who confiscated the handgun and arrested the man on weapons charges, according to Farbstein.
Maryland Transportation Authority Police Lt. Kevin Ayd identified the man as Joseph John Giandalia, 56.
Giandalia was transported to the Anne Arundel County Court, then released on his own recognizance, Ayd said.
Giandalia could not immediately be reached for comment.
He is a board member on the Wrightsville Borough Municipal Authority, according to the authority's website.
14 guns so far: Friday's incident is the 14th time so far this year that a TSA officer has found a firearm while screening passengers, according to Farbstein.
In 2016, a total of 24 guns were found, she said.
The TSA can impose civil fines of up to $12,000 for people caught bringing firearms to airport checkpoints, she said.
