Police: Newberry man accidentally shot himself

A Newberry Township man escaped life-threatening injury when he accidentally shot himself Thursday afternoon, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was cleaning a handgun shortly after 4 p.m. when it went off, Newberry Township Police Chief John Snyder said.

The bullet caused a grazing wound on the man's thigh, the chief said.

He was treated at a local hospital and is OK, according to Snyder.

It happened on Fargreen Court, officials said.
