Police: Intentional wreck leads to robbery in York Twp.
York Area Regional Police Department is cautioning area residents after a woman was robbed at gunpoint Sunday by a man who police say purposely rammed into her car several times, forcing her to pull over, Chief Tim Damon said.
The incident took place around 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Dew Drop Road and Power Mill Road in York Township, according to a news release.
The suspect, an unidentified man in his 20s or 30s, struck the victim's car three times from behind as she approached the intersection, the release said.
Damon said investigators are convinced the suspect intended to hit the victim's car in an effort to force her to pull over so he could rob her.
"This was intentional. He intentionally hit her three times," Damon said.
Masked gunman: After stopping to inspect the damage, the suspect motioned for the victim — a woman in her 60s, Damon said — to pull her car over to the side of the road. After doing so, the victim again got out of her car only to be met by the same man, now with a mask pulled over his face, pointing a gun at her and demanding money, the release said.
The robber got away with an undisclosed amount of cash and the woman's cellphone, according to the release. He left the area in an SUV of unknown color. No further description was available, Damon said.
Investigators are working on the possibility the woman was targeted because of her age, he said.
"We're still working on that," Damon said.
Beyond the vague description of both the suspect and his vehicle, police do not have much to go on.
Damon said this type of occurrence is often seen in larger metropolitan areas, but he has not heard of such a thing happening in his jurisdiction.
"Not in our area. This is the first time I've heard of that happening in our area," he said.
Safety tips: The release suggested a couple of safe practices citizens can employ should a driver find themselves in the same position as the victim in this case. First, if the vehicle is still driveable, move to a well-populated area that is well lit.
Second, do not fight or resist an armed attacker, the release said.
Finally, after any accident, exchange information and call 911.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the York Area Regional Police at 717-741-1259, or call Crime Stoppers at 877-TIPS. Information resulting in an arrest and conviction can be eligible for a cash reward.
