Police: Two seriously injured when they fall off mattress pulled by truck in Manheim Twp.
Two partygoers were flown to WellSpan York Hospital with injuries after they fell off a mattress being pulled by a pickup truck, police said.
Northern York County Regional responded to reports of a crash at 2:54 a.m. Sunday in the 5500 block of Wolfgang School Road in Manheim Township.
Upon showing up, police found a 26-year-old woman from Glen Rock with a major head injury and a 24-year-old man, also of Glen Rock, with a severe leg injury, according to police.
There were no vehicles at the scene, and police were instead directed to the 6200 block of Wolfgang School Road, where a party had occurred, police said.
That is where police spoke with 19-year-old Elijah Winbourne, of Hanover, who was driving the pickup truck when the accident happened, police allege.
"He had a chain hooked to the back of his pickup truck," according to a news release. "He was pulling a box spring and mattress set behind the truck as partygoers road on the mattress."
The man and woman went off the mattress and struck a sign when Winbourne was driving around a curve on Wolfgang School Road, police said.
Both victims were flown to York Hospital, and the 26-year-old woman is expected to survive her head injury, according to police. There was no word on the man's condition
After the accident, Winbourne left the scene and returned to the party. Later, police discovered that the box springs and mattress were thrown into a bonfire, police said.
As of Tuesday, Winbourne had not been charged in this incident, according to online court records.
