More than a dozen local restaurants will be vying for bragging rights as they showcase new creations during York City Burger Week in June.

Returning for its fourth year, the annual event hosted by the York City Independent Restaurant Association — this year June 10-16 — brings out a competitive spirit in York City's independent bars and restaurants.

Culinary teams at each participating restaurant will create exclusive menu items and specials available only for Burger Week, including at least one new burger to represent their own unique combinations of flavors and products.

It could be a re-creation of a traditional recipe, a vegetarian take on a burger or "something that we’re not even thinking of yet," a news release states.

Updated specials will be released on restaurant Facebook pages and York City Dining's event page, rwyork.com/burgerweek.

Through the Burger Week Facebook page, several eateries have offered a look at their special  offerings for the week.

Mezzogiorno, located in Central Market, posted Wednesday that it will again offer its Mediterranean Monster Burger among its specials. The multi-layer burger boasts a variety of Mediterranean flavors and features three quarter-pound burger patties, a kalamata olive and roasted red pepper tapenade, three different cheeses and sun-dried tomato and onion relish, all on ciabatta garlic bread.

"It's about a pound and a half of Mediterranean bliss,"  Mezzogiorno chef/owner Timothy Spangler said of the creation during last year's Burger Week event.

Crazy Tomato, 1270 E. Philadelphia St., posted this week that its featured burger will pay tribute to York City Mayor Michael Helfrich. The Helfrich is a flame-broiled burger with mozzarella and American cheeses, Southern pulled pork and a homemade sriracha barbecue sauce, all wrapped up in fresh soft pretzel.

J.R.'s Fries in Central Market will offer its take on the chili cheeseburger with J.R.'s Texas Hot Burger, featuring a half-pound burger topped with a dab of yellow mustard, their signature chili sauce and triple diced onions.

Revival Social Club posted on the Burger Week Facebook page that it will feature a number of specials for the week. Those include What the Duck?, which includes ground duck, foie gras aioli, havarti cheese, red cabbage sauerkraut, onion rings and a duck egg.

Pepper's Grille in Central Market boasts about its Nacho Burger in a recent post. The special includes homemade beer queso, diced onions and jalapeño as well as crunchy tortilla strips on a grilled bun. The special also will be offered on a bed of lettuce for those who are carb-conscious, according to the Facebook post.
