Police identify man killed Thursday in York Twp. crash
A Red Lion man died when he lost control of his car and crashed in York Township, police said.
Casper A. Schotanus Jr. was driving south in the 400 block of South Duke Street about 6:45 p.m. when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the road, York Area Regional Police said in a news release.
His vehicle went down an embankment and rolled over, according to the York County Coroner's Office.
Schotanus, 36, of West Broadway in Red Lion, was partially thrown from his vehicle during the crash and died at the scene of blunt-force head trauma, the coroner's office said.
He was not wearing a seat belt, York County Coroner Pam Gay said. No autopsy is planned.
Dallastown Deputy Fire Chief Pete Ehrhart said when fire/rescue crews arrived at the scene, it was clear the driver was deceased.
"We stabilized the vehicle until the coroner got there," he said. "That's all we could do."
The crashed car ended up on its side, he said.
Fire police from Dallastown's Rescue Fire Co. No. 1 also handled traffic control at the crash, Ehrhart said.
The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information about it is asked to call York Area Regional Police at 717-741-1259.
