Halloween season is upon us, with pumpkin-shaped candy hitting stores, spooky decorations going up and kids preparing costumes for their big night: trick or treat.

At York Township's Make Believin' Costumes, at 2709 S. Queen St., store owner, Debbi Reck said, "a lot of kids have been going the scary route this year," with choices such as skeletons, vampires, zombies, mummies and characters from "The Nightmare Before Christmas."

And another big seller is non-trademarked characters based on the popular video game "Fortnite" — a multiplayer interactive zombie survival game.

Adults are choosing pirates, Roaring '20s-themes, classics such as Jekyll and Hyde and decade-based characters including rock stars from the band Kiss, she said, while both kids and adults are less inclined to be superheroes this year.

Tips: To help families prepare for the annual tradition, Patient First released a list of tips to help children who are more sensitive to sights and sounds, including wearing comfortable, lightweight clothing that is well-fitted with minimal extras such as masks and layers; walking the route ahead of time; and learning Halloween street safety and manners.

Any parents worried about food treats can have candy X-rayed for free at the urgent care center, located at 2960 E. Market St., in Springettsbury Township, from 6-9 p.m. Oct. 26-Nov. 3, or look for teal pumpkins — a sign that houses are giving away nonfood treats.

Local firm KGB Injury Law also advised homeowners to remove tripping hazards, take care to not overload extension cords, and keep pathways well-lit.

A full list of trick-or-treat dates and times can be found below, along with information on special events. Several municipalities have asked that residents leave their porch lights on if they are welcoming trick-or-treaters.
