A new junior firefighter with Glen Rock Hose & Ladder Co. was dispatched to his first call over the weekend — to his own burning home.

The 14-year-old was at the fire station about 5:25 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, when the call came in for a house fire in the 100 block of Church Street in the borough, according to Glen Rock Fire Chief Ron McCullough.

The boy's father was home when the blaze started, according to the chief, who said the man got out safely on his own.

When firefighters arrived, flames could be seen coming from a second-floor bedroom, McCullough said.

"We made him stay back," McCullough said of the junior firefighter. "He was pretty emotional."

Other firefighters made short work of the blaze.

"Glen Rock crews knocked the fire down fast, before it got any further," the chief said. "Everybody did an excellent job."

Firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 15 minutes, after which they stayed on the scene checking to see if the fire extended, checking for hot spots and doing overhaul, according to McCullough.

Ankle injury: One firefighter hurt his ankle while battling the fire, the chief said, but no one was seriously injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and it is not considered suspicious, McCullough said.

The second-floor bedroom was destroyed, he said, while the rest of the home sustained smoke damage and some minimal water damage.

"We're thinking it's electrical in nature at this time," the chief said. A damage estimate wasn't immediately available.

McCullough said the home is salvageable, but the family was temporarily displaced in large part because of smoke damage.

The junior firefighter and his family are being assisted by the American Red Cross/Great Pennsylvania Region, he said.

McCullough said the house fire is unrelated to an interruption in electrical service two hours earlier in the borough.

Service had to be turned off by Met-Ed workers because a painter in a bucket truck shocked himself on a high-tension line, according to the chief.
