A mid-state casino will soon be home to the convergence of sports and gambling, and a mini counterpart planned for Springettsbury Township could eventually follow suit.

Penn National Gaming was given the green light Wednesday, Oct. 3, to offer sports wagering at its Dauphin County casino location, Hollywood Casino and race track, and online, according to the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

The York location has to clear several hurdles before it can start talking apps, wagers and professional sports.

Penn National is currently seeking a state license for its proposed Hollywood Casino York, which would open with approximately 500 slot machines and 20 table games. The proposed location will be designed to “accommodate up to 750 slot machines and 40 table games,” according to the Wyomissing-based gaming company.

“They would have to come back in the future to seek approval of a sports book at a Category 4 casino,” said state Gaming Control Board Communications Director Doug Harbach. “There is no time frame on that, so any decision by Penn National could be well into the future.”

Penn National has reported that it would invest up to $120 million on the Springettsbury Township casino, between retrofitting the former Sears store at the York Galleria Mall — where it would be located — and upgrading infrastructure to the surrounding area, as well as $52.6 million on the Category 4 slots and table games license fees.

A hearing for the proposed Hollywood Casino York has been scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, the gaming control board reported. It will be held at 10 a.m. at Springettsbury Township’s administrative building, 1501 Mount Zion Road.

Eric Schippers, senior vice president of Public Affairs and Government Relations at Penn National, said sports betting at Hollywood Casino York is something "we'll be exploring down the road."

"Our focus right now is on getting all of our final approvals to move ahead with the development of the casino," Schippers confirmed.
