York County Libraries to offer free classes on opioids, Narcan
York County Libraries is joining the effort to tackle the opioid crisis with a series of free public information classes.
The organization is partnering with York County through the York/Adams Drug & Alcohol Commission to offer two courses: a general overview of opioids and addiction, and a course specifically about Narcan, a brand of naloxone, which can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose and save lives.
Audrey Gladfelter, an administrator for the YADAC, and Mina Edmondson, director of Martin Library in York City, addressed the York County commissioners at a meeting Wednesday, Oct. 3.
"Our library staff recognize the severity of this issue and pursued this opportunity to do what we do best," Edmondson said.
What they do best, she added, is providing easy access to information and connecting their patrons with resources and experts.
Libraries are particularly well-suited to provide this information, Edmondson said, because they serve all people from all walks of life in York County.
"The opioid crisis knows no boundaries," she said.
The courses being offered are Opioid 101 and Narcan 101.
Opioid 101 will address the stigma of addiction with discussion about whether addiction is a disease or a bad behavior, the risk factors that contribute to developing a substance-abuse problem and the process of treatment and recovery.
Narcan 101 will focus on opioid overdoses and discuss topics such as preventing an overdose, recognizing the signs and symptoms of an overdose and administering naloxone.
Edmondson said the Martin Library staff received the Opioid 101 training at its August staff meeting, and all YCL staff will be offered voluntary training on opioids and Narcan in October.
These classes will be free and open to the public, and sessions will be held at every library in the county beginning this weekend and continuing through January 2019.
The first Narcan 101 session will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Martin Library in York City.
