York-based Logos Academy expands to Harrisburg

York-based Logos Academy is expanding its footprint with a new school in Harrisburg.

New City School will be officially affiliated with the academy, operating its K-12 program as Logos Academy Harrisburg this fall.

Starting with kindergarten, the Harrisburg location will add an additional class each year. New City School, now entering its third year, will continue to operate as a preschool.

The partnership was years in the making, said Logos York's director of advancement, Otto Monroy.

New City has a similar model to York's academy at the preschool level — and expanding the academy's reach had been an ongoing conversation with a core group in Harrisburg who "liked what we were doing in Logos York," he said.

Founded in 1998 by two women, the independent, nonprofit school serves 12 districts in York County, focusing on strong family partnerships, a warm learning culture in small class sizes and a Christ-centered vision tailored to students facing many challenges, Monroy said.

Two-thirds of its students come from families at or near the federal poverty level, and three-quarters of the school's budget comes from fundraising, which supports scholarships for students based on their needs.

For example, some students might pay as little as $1,000 per year for tuition, while others pay $9,200 — depending on how much financial aid is needed, he said.

"That's where we differ from traditional private schools," which are 80 percent to 90 percent funded by tuition, he added.

The school also has open admission, which means unlike many other Christian schools, enrollment is not faith-based. Students do not have to be Christians to attend.

And according to school statistics, the student body is ethnically diverse as well — with its students identifying as 34.4 percent African-American, 27.4 percent white, 26.6 percent Hispanic, 10 percent multi-racial and 1.6 percent other.

"We seek and celebrate cultural diversity," the school's fact sheet reads. "Students are encouraged to engage in respectful dialogue around a variety of ideas surrounding academic subjects and societal challenges."

The model works: And the school has a good track record for success.

Students from the Class of 2018 had a 100 percent acceptance rate to the colleges of their choice and ranked No. 1 in English and No. 2  in math for York and Adams counties, according to public school scores.

But Monroy noted it's a small sample size. The graduating class was only 10 to 12 students.

Positive results created interest in Harrisburg, Lancaster and beyond the region, so Monroy said school officials intend to expand to serve these areas and more students in York County as well.

Over the next few years, they will be "knocking on a few more doors," he said.

Logos Harrisburg: The affiliation between York and Harrisburg's academies will allow both schools to operate under the trademark name, but they will be separate nonprofit entities.

Logos York will have a consulting agreement to help the new K-12 replicate its academic and fundraising model, but there will be no financial ties other than some fees associated with that agreement.

Each school will have independent school boards and executive directors, and Monroy said it will be important to work closely with the executive director during the transition because a leadership has a lot to do with the successful implementation of the model.

"The launch of Logos Academy Harrisburg is a promising sign that more families can be served," stated Logos York CEO Aaron Anderson.
