Memorial Hospital owner puts Elmwood Mansion up for sale
As the construction of the new UPMC Pinnacle medical campus continues in West Manchester Township, the health care provider is looking to sell its former Spring Garden Township properties, including the iconic Elmwood Mansion.
The historic building is on the market for $1.1 million, hospital spokesman Jason McSherry confirmed.
The listing can be found on the Susquehanna Real Estate website.
"We've been working with UPMC for perhaps eight or nine months in anticipation of the new facility," Susquehanna Real Estate President and CEO Jack Kay said.
Elmwood Mansion is zoned apartment-office, which allows for an array of uses, he said, adding that its "visible" and "strategic" location provides for immediate access to I-83.
Since 1985, Memorial Hospital has kept the building in "excellent condition," Kay noted.
"It's been updated throughout the years," he said. "It's a charming structure, and they managed to preserve some of the nice architectural features and save elements of a building from that era."
The building is 6,500 square feet, and the porch is 2,200 square feet, he said.
“Built in 1835 by Jacob Brillinger, the Greek Revival style home was moved from its original location at the site of the hospital on South Belmont Street to its current location near the I-83 exit in 1905,” according to a description on Susquehanna Real Estate's website.
“The extensive Classic Revival porch, added after the move, wraps around three sides of the building and a second-floor balcony," the agency states. "Extensive renovations to the property were done in 1987 by Memorial Hospital to use the building as a conference center and apartment space for temporary medical staff.”
Susquehanna Real Estate describes the property as "the perfect choice for a distinctive office location or a stately residence." The 2.5 acres include 35 parking spaces, two entranceways and a detached Gate House.
Construction of the new Memorial Hospital is on schedule, and the new facility should be accepting patients by the summer of 2019, McSherry reported.
PinnacleHealth bought Memorial Hospital, located on Belmont Street in Spring Garden Township, last July as part of a deal that also included the acquisition of hospitals in Lancaster, Lititz and Carlisle.
