Instead of waiting for scheduled bus times, public transit users soon will be able to request a ride at their convenience and "hop on" a new neighborhood bus.

Rabbit Transit, York County's regional public transportation provider, announced the launch of its Microtransit pilot project on Tuesday, Aug. 21, according to a news release.

The Hopper will be effective Monday, Aug. 27, in the areas east of York City and around Red Lion, using app-based technology created by TransLoc, the release states.

Much like ordering an Uber or Lyft, passengers can can download an app to request a ride. They will get an estimated pick-up time, find out when they are next in the queue and receive a real-time alert when their destination is approaching.

The on-demand transit project allows travelers to take nine-person accessible vans within designated zones and make connections to the fixed route system.

Rabbit Transit Executive Director Richard Farr said in the release that he believes the Microtransit system will help public transportation appeal to a broader audience “by conveniently connecting local destinations and neighboring communities more easily."

For its pilot run, Rabbit will have two Hoppers available in the Red Lion and East York areas Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in specified zones.

Riders can select their destinations within the zone maps online at www.rabbittransit.org/hopper or through the app.

The cost for a ride is $2 per trip, which will increase to a $3 base rate after an introductory period, the release states. Passengers can pay by cash or the Token Transit app, according to the website.
