First human case of West Nile in York County for 2018 reported

York County has its first human case of West Nile virus for 2018.

The case was reported by the state Department of Health, according to a Wednesday, Aug. 15, news release from the Penn State Extension York County West Nile Virus Program.

The first human case was diagnosed in Allegheny County, according to a release on the program's website July 31. Two additional cases were diagnosed in Franklin County and one in York County as of Wednesday, the website states.

West Nile virus is often found in open containers left in backyards.

According to the state Department of Environmental Protection, the state is seeing the highest level of virus activity in the mosquito population since West Nile was first introduced in 2000.

Recent flooding and heavy rains have posed an unusually high risk as waters receded.

"Any container that can collect water will produce mosquitoes," according to the West Nile program release.

The DEP stated that more than 150 people have been infected with the virus in the past six years — and mosquitoes carrying West Nile were found in 51 counties in the state by Aug. 1.

In York County, mosquitoes carrying the virus have been found in 15 municipalities.

According to the DEP, the state Department of Health issued an advisory through the Health Advisory Network to alert medical professionals of the risks this year.

Gov. Tom Wolf and the state Legislature recently approved a $140,000 increase to the program's budget, according to the DEP release.

West Nile is a risk until the first hard frost in the fall, the program release states.

Numbers continue to rise in York County, with 54 additional positive samples and a total of 291, which makes it leader in the state.

The county has been leading Pennsylvania in positive samples since 71 more samples were collected in the last two weeks of July.
