Heritage Rail Trail under construction in Springettsbury Township
A “vast majority” of the Heritage Rail Trail County Park Loucks Mill Road extension project in Springettsbury Township will “pose no hindrance” to motorists, according to the township.
The York County Rail Trail Authority explains the work will occur on the east and west banks of the Codorus Creek, from the intersection of Route 30 and Loucks Mill Road at the existing rail trail parking lot to the intersection of Hamilton Avenue and North George Street in York City.
Construction work began July 9 and is slated to end Dec. 11, the township noted.
The existing trail section and parking lot in the Route 30 and Loucks Mill Road area, the township confirmed, will be closed for a short period. For 90 days, motorists will not be able to use the Route 30 East right-turn lane.
There will be no parking and single-lane traffic restrictions during work hours on Hamilton Avenue, according to the township.
Project: Changes that will occur during the project, the township explains, include: “On the east bank, construction will involve a ramp and retaining walls in the parking lot to transport trail visitors up to the south walkway of the Route 30 Bridge over the Codorus Creek. On the west bank, construction will involve approximately 1 mile of trail, drainage system, prefabricated bridge over Wills Run, and modifications to Hamilton Avenue.”
Last year, The York County Rail Trail Authority reported it had secured $2 million in numerous grants to connect the Heritage Rail Trail between Springettsbury Township and York City.
Gwen Loose, executive director of the York County Rail Trail Authority, has said the Heritage Rail Trail County Park will extend more than 25 miles from John Rudy County Park in East Manchester Township to the Northern Central Rail Trail in Maryland.
The trail will connect several population centers, such as North York and York City, making it easier for tens of thousands of people to access the trails close to home and work, Loose has said.
