Officials: Body found near Long Level likely missing boater
Emergency officials said a body found in the Susquehanna River Wednesday evening is probably that of a Lancaster City man who fell into the water Tuesday evening.
A definite identification had not been made by press time. However, the body was found a short distance downstream from Long Level Marina, in the area of the dock at the Lake Clarke Rescue station, Blue Rock Fire Rescue Commissioner Duane Hagelgans said.
The marina is where the 35-year-old slipped into the water as he was trying to step from a boat onto a dock.
Hagelgans did not immediately have information on who made the discovery. It was called in from the marina around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Hagelgans said the man was on the river Tuesday with half a dozen friends in a borrowed boat. Shortly before 8 p.m., they pulled into Long Level Marina in Lower Windsor Township to get fuel.
The man fell as he tried to disembark. He was not wearing a life preserver and “sank right away,” Hagelgans said.
It’s possible he hit his head, though investigators don’t know if that’s the case, he said.
Family members have been notified, the commissioner said. The man’s name had not been released by Thursday afternoon.
The initial search began Tuesday evening and was called off around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday. Efforts resumed around 9:30 a.m.
Emergency responders deployed around eight boats in a seven-mile stretch on the west side of the Susquehanna River between Long Level and Safe Harbor, Hagelgans said.
A state police helicopter arrived around 11 a.m. to search over the same area.
Around 1 p.m., the full-scale search was called off due to the heat, Hagelgans said. A smaller-scale effort continued as volunteer personnel became available, he said.
Among the units responding to the scene were Blue Rock Fire Rescue, Columbia Borough Fire Department and the Conestoga, Marietta and Pioneer fire companies. Units from York County also responded.
At its peak, around 40 volunteers took part in the effort, Hagelgans said.
