She was inspired by her own teacher to submit her work to the competition, Jasmine stated in a news release, adding that she is eager to try new things.

The awards were founded in 1923, and students are judged based on originality, technical skill and personal voice or vision, according to the website.

The competition's Alliance for Young Artists and Writers partners with more than 100 visual arts and literary arts organizations in communities across the country to receive submissions in 29 categories from students in grades 7-12.

Jasmine is a student at PA Virtual, a K-12 public cyber charter school based out of King of Prussia, Montgomery County, and she entered the regional competition run by the Philadelphia Writing Project at the University of Pennsylvania.

She praised her school's online setting for giving her the time to be creative.

“The flexibility in my schedule allows me to write whenever I have a moment of inspiration," she stated.

The competitions receive approximately 300,000 submissions annually, and winners of all levels gain recognition for their college applications and resumes.

The awards website also has opportunities to apply for scholarships.
