Mezzogiorno's Mediterranean Monster Burger lives up to its name
It’s Burger Week in York City through Saturday, May 26, and there are 13 area restaurants with just over 30 unique offerings.
I love a great burger and was intrigued by many. I’ll be checking off the list I printed from the Restaurant Week website.
At first glance, one that stood buns above the rest was Mezzogiorno’s Mediterranean Monster Burger. I stopped by Mezzogiorno, which is located in Central Market, and spoke with chef/owner Timothy Spangler before I made a video of him building my burger.
“Because we have so many great ingredients and so many fantastic flavors,” Spangler said, ”I figured, why not make a burger and incorporate as many different flavors that we can use into one burger as possible.”
Spangler says it’s all Mediterranean but there are different ingredient combinations on each layer.
The burger layers are separated by a garlic butter grilled Ciabatta roll, with a quarter-pound burger on each of three layers — with each layer offering its own Italian/Mediterranean flavor combination.
I can attest that this well-stacked Mediterranean Monster Burger is, indeed, a monster. The skewers on which it is served are key to keeping it together. This allows one to sample each layer on its own without getting too messy.
The standout flavors for me were the roasted red pepper, Kalamata olive tapenade and fontina cheese.
I would definitely recommend this dish for sharing. My fiancé and I split it, but only one of us finished our entire half. Like I said, I love burgers.
