Giant recalls frozen broccoli that tested positive for listeria
Giant Food Stores has voluntarily recalled frozen broccoli that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.
The recall is of Giant's private brand of Frozen Broccoli Cuts (16 oz.) with a sell-by date of March 15, 2020, and UPC code 68826700926, according to Giant.
No illnesses have been reported since the frozen vegetable product tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a common organism found in nature, according to Giant.
All affected products have been removed from store shelves after the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection discovered the contamination, the food store reported in a statement.
Listeria monocytogenes, while uncommon, can cause serious effects, including high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea, according to the statement.
“Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections in those with weakened immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with HIV infection or undergoing chemotherapy,” according to the food store’s statement.
Anyone showing those symptoms is urged to seek medical attention, the statement continued.
Customers can return the product to their local store for a full refund, Giant reported. Customers can contact the food store’s Customer Support Center at 1-888-814-4268.
