A nighttime milling and concrete repair operation will mark the start of a bridge and pavement preservation project on a section of Interstate 83 in York County beginning in May.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that its contractor will begin the preparatory work Tuesday, May 8. The project will encompass the 7.33 mile-section from the bridge over Mount Airy Road in Hopewell Township through Shrewsbury Township to the bridge over Route 214, Dunkard Valley Road, in Springfield Township, according to a news release.

An $11 million contract for the project was awarded Feb. 12 to the Montgomery County-based H&K Group Inc. The scope of the project will include the full width removal of the top layer of asphalt, accelerated concrete patching and spall repairs, roadway base repairs, resurfacing with a 4.5-inch Superpave asphalt overlay, bridge joint replacements, concrete bridge deck and substructure repairs, guiderail replacement and new signs and pavement parking, according to PennDOT.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2018, according the news release.

PennDOT is advising that the contractor will not restrict travel lanes or ramps between 5 a.m. and 7 p.m., as all the roadwork will take place at night.

Evening drivers might be restricted to a single lane of travel in either direction for five or six nights a week as crews conduct the nighttime milling and concrete pavement repairs before the asphalt paving.

To avoid delays, drivers should allow for additional time or seek an alternate route, according to PennDOT.

They are also reminded to be alert, obey traffic signs and slow down while traveling through work zones.
