Spring Garden Township Commissioner Dan Rooney was the driver behind increasing transparency on the township’s website.

Commissioners at their regular April meeting unanimously approved uploading public information online once it is approved.

The township's solicitor, Steven Hovis, of Stock and Leader, worked with Rooney on the policy.

Hovis said there are “certain documents” that fit legal parameters for public information, such as ordinances, agendas, meeting minutes, budgets, proposed budgets and adopted budgets. The township posts some of that information now on its website, www.springgardentwp.org.

But commissioners voted to allow reports and studies as directed by the board of commissioners to be posted online, too.

Hovis said if the township “posted every report or study,” there would be hundreds of documents.

President Tom Warman said some documents won’t be posted because they include personnel information, which is protected by state statute.

Because of staff limitations, when commissioners approve a document for online posting, the township will designate an employee to post it online.
